EV High Voltage Battery Warnings as experienced in Singapore

I own a Nissan Leaf in Singapore which was a decision made without considering EV charging infrastructure Singapore was still rolling out more EV chargers. This resulted in a car that has very little fast charging option in Singapore. I will not easily get a fast charge in Singapore which gave me very little chance to fast charge.

With that being said, we have a 3YO Nissan Leaf in Singapore with a high-voltage battery warning. This resulted in my car going into “turtle mode” and not being able to drive fast. There were numerous warnings before this and bringing it into Nissan Service Centre never resulted in any conclusive findings. Finally, the car reached its final straw and forced the mechanics to take drastic measures to check the battery. I thought the mechanics checked the high-voltage battery a few months ago when I sent it in but they didn’t do it thoroughly, they only checked using the simple computer connected to the car.

It was a blessing in disguise as the warning came out right after my car ran about a hundred thousand kilometers. Sales will be looking into checking to see if this car could be considered to be under warranty. I’m fortunate to have a great responsive sales representative who always checked and supported the various requests I made. During this 4-week long battery check, they also gave me a complimentary car to use while the car was in the workshop. I’m forever grateful to receive a free car rental that came at a critical time of the year for me.

I do not currently have any updates from the workshop but I’m happy to have a car while they check through the individual high voltage cells in the car. Yes, the Nissan Leaf has a modular battery system and I could change the individual cells instead of the whole battery pack, this may cost $3k(SGD) to change. This may hopefully save me some money as the entire battery pack would cost at least $15k(SGD) to replace. Some cars have a single battery pack system while some are modular, always check this before purchasing an electric vehicle or car.

As of now, I have no updates for you. Stay tuned to this post as I will update this post about this high voltage testing and conclusions from it. I hope this would help you have a good idea on how an EV repair would cost and the time it will take to resolve an issue with the high voltage battery.
